SÁMIS

At the northernmost limits of Europe, the Sami people are preserving an ancestral culture against the threats of modernity, climate disruptions and erosion of their valuable ancestral savoir-faire.

This series of photographs and my documentary SÁMIS, present a diptych tale in which human stories and natural wonders are woven together.

This work, which follows on from my Savoir- Faire and Eikasia projects, is a visual tribute to the land and the Sami culture, where against the odds, collective memory is passed down.

SÁMIS invites to discover the subtle art of coexisting with time, honoring a precious legacy through deep respect for the natural rhythms and knowledge passed down through generations.

DOCUMENTARY

52 min documentary

Dive deep into the lives of the Sámi people as they strive to reinvent their identity while preserving their heritage. The documentary gives voice to the Sámi themselves, who share their stories, experiences and concerns about the place of their ancestral culture in modern society.

We discover the profound symbiosis between the Sámi and their natural environment. We’ll witness fishing on frozen lakes, the precise practice of duodji, and the constant interaction with the reindeer that symbolise their way of life.

This film will also take us on a rediscovery of traditional Sámi cuisine, as well as the unique expression of their spirituality through their joik, an ancestral chant imbued with emotion.

SÁMIS is an intimate journey, a vibrant tribute to Sámi culture.
