SÁMIS
Film documentary & Photography
This project brings together themes and media I’ve been exploring for years. It combines a photographic series featuring portraits and landscapes, and a 52-minute documentary. Together, these form an intimate and delicate portrayal of Sámi culture and their territory, at the northernmost edge of Europe.
The documentary shares the voices, stories, and reflections of Sámi people as they navigate contemporary challenges such as climate change, cultural preservation, and the transmission of knowledge to future generations.
Through human narratives and visual encounters, we discover the profound relationship between the Sámi and their natural environment. We witness everyday moments such as fishing on frozen lakes, the precise practice of duodji, interactions with reindeer, the expression of Sámi spirituality through joik, an ancestral chant, and the subtle beauty of traditional Sámi cuisine.
SÁMIS is a tribute celebrating the vibrant resilience and profound cultural identity of the Sámi people.
